On 17 June 2014 ten secondary pupils from across the city took part in the City2City relay, travelling from the City Chambers on the Royal Mile to deliver a message of hope and support for the upcoming Commonwealth Games to the City Chambers in Glasgow. Over two days they traveled by canoe, bike and foot, carrying a specially engraved baton with their message:
In the spirit of friendship and cooperation, The City of Edinburgh carries this message of support to The City of Glasgow. We are proud to see the Commonwealth Games return to Scotland. We wish you every success in delivering a modern and exciting Games.
Barry Hewitt, Principal Teacher for Outdoor Learning, tells us more.
On the first day the pupils were joined by teams made up of primary school pupils from
- Sciennes Primary School
- Tollcross Primary School
- Craiglockhart Primary School
- St Cuthbert’s Primary School
- Redhall Special School
- Royal High School
- Fetlaw CLD group
As well as Duke of Edinburgh Participants and the Green Team volunteers who helped carry the baton on its way along ten individual legs.
The event was organised by the Sports and Outdoor Learning Unit and was funded by a National Lottery ‘Celebrate It 2014′ grant.
Over 110 young people participated directly in the event with many more cheering the pupils along. The secondary school pupils were nominated by their schools and have been training for the upcoming challenge by gaining proficiency awards in canoeing and cycling.
he team arrived safety at the Glasgow City Chambers in George Square on Wednesday afternoon and were greeted by the Lord Provost of Glasgow. They explained their journey and presented the baton. This was followed by an invitation to join the Lord Provost for afternoon tea.
All the staff involved in the relay -from both the Sports and Outdoor Learning Unit and Bridge 8 Canoe hub – congratulate all the participants on, not only completing the relay but also, representing the City of Edinburgh with such determination and effort.
